Herman Bernstein, diplomat, journalist, novelist, and translator was born in Lithuania. He oversaw the American mission as ambassador to Albania in the years 1930-1933, a time that served him to carry out studies that would bring another lens on Albania to the American Department of State. He was born in Lithuania as a member of a Jewish family that emigrated to America around 1890. He first started working as a translator of the Russian language of several Russian authors for the newspapers of the time. Afterwards, he became the founder of the two most prominent newspapers of the Jewish community. The correspondent’s profession would immerse the young Bernstein in the culture and history of the many countries he would visit, mainly during the First World War. He was a participant in the Peace Conference in Paris (1919) and his stay there would be fruitful, as it brought him closer to diplomacy in a very short time. Bernstein was a good researcher of various problems of Albanian history during his function as ambassador, mainly investigating the history of religions and their mysticism in Albania. He passed away in the United States of America in 1935. (Photo: Herman Bernstein)
