Pano Taçi, writer and poet, was born in Gjirokastra. During the years of the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War, he became active as a partisan. He was part of the 43rd Brigade and took part in the liberation of Kosovo from the Germans in 1944. However, despite the facts mentioned above, he was arrested by the communists who took power after the war in 1947, for attempted border violations, as he wanted to escape to Greece, to go further to America, where his grandfather was. After two years in prison, he was interned for 6 years in Lushnja. After returning to Tirana, he started writing again. Because of the poem “Shokut Zot” (“To Comrade God”) where he directly attacked Enver Hoxha, he ended up in prison again. This time they put him in Spaçi prison. Later he refused to vote in the electoral elections and was sentenced again. In 1986, Pano Taçi was released from prison and again taken to exile, as far as possible from Tirana, in the district of Peshkopia. Thus, Pano Taçi’s life until 1990 continued from one prison to another, from one internment camp to another. They sent him to Valias, to Kavaje, to the Maliqi marshes, places with the most difficult jobs for those interned. After the 90s of the 20th century, Pano Taçi continued to publish and he produced more than 13 books of poetry. He passed away at the “Mother Teresa” hospital in Tirana, in 2012. His body was placed in the lobby of the National Theatre, where many friends, citizens and artists paid tribute as well as the President of the Republic. (In the photo: Pano Taçi)
