Petro Zheji, translator and researcher, was born in Tirana. In his hometown, he completed secondary and higher studies, first in mathematics and then in the branch of Albanian language and literature. He worked in education and then as a translator in the “Naim Frashëri” publishing house. Because of free thoughts there were consequences and limitations of his creative rights. He has translated into Albanian a number of novels by great authors of world literature, such as “Don Quixote of Mancha” (vol. II, Cervantes), “Revival” (L. Tolstoy), “Foma Gordeyev” (M. Gorky), “The Bells of Basel” (L. Aragon) etc. His translations stand out for the careful processing of the phrase according to the nature of Albanian, for the richness of the vocabulary and original creations. Petro Zheji has also taken up studies, in which he aimed to apply mathematical knowledge in presenting and arguing his views on the source of Albanian and its relationship with other languages of the Indo-European family, especially with Sanskrit. His studies in this field have been synthesized in the work “Shqipja dhe sanskritishtja” (“Albanian and Sanskrit”) in two volumes (2001, 2006). He passed away in 2015. (In the photo: Petro Zheji)
