Petro Zheji, translator and researcher, passed away. He was born in Tirana, in 1929. He completed his secondary and higher studies in his hometown, first in mathematics and then in the field of Albanian language and literature. He worked in education and then as a translator in the “Naim Frashëri” publishing house. Because of their free thoughts, he suffered consequences and limitations of his creative rights. He has translated into Albanian a number of novels by great authors of world literature, such as “Don Quixote of Mancha” (vol. II, Cervantes), “Revival” (L. Tolstoy), “Foma Gordejev” (M. Gorky), “The Bells of Basel” (L. Aragon) etc. The careful crafting of phrases distinguishes his translations to match the nature of the Albanian language, richness of vocabulary, and original, striking creations. Petro Zheji has also engaged in studies, aiming to apply mathematical knowledge in presenting and arguing his viewpoints on the origin of the Albanian language and its relation to other Indo-European languages, especially Sanskrit. His studies in this field have been synthesized in the work “Albanian and Sanskrit” in two volumes (2001, 2006). (In the photo: Petro Zheji)
