Viktor Volaj, cleric, martyr of the Catholic Church, was born in Shirokë, Shkodër . On September 10, 1925, he entered the Franciscan seminary. Starting from 1937 until 1946, he was a professor of classical Greek and Latin languages, at “Liceum Illyricum“. As a good connoisseur of the Albanian language, in 1946 he was called to the Congress of the League of Writers for linguistic matters. In 1942, he would comment on the work “Lahuta e Malcisë” (“The highland lute”). From 1949 to 1954 he was interned in Tepelën, Lundërz and Kamzë. After the exile, he returned to continue serving as a parish priest in Tirana and Biza in the years 1954-1967. During this period, he was engaged in linguistic and historical studies. After the churches were closed, he stayed with his relatives under the supervision of the communist state until 1990. He spent his last years in the Franciscan Assembly of Gjujadoli. The unpublished writings of Father Viktor Volaj are stored in the Archive of the Franciscan Library “Father Gjergj Fishta”, in Shkodër. He passed away in the Franciscan Assembly of Gjuhadoli (Shkodër), in 1995. (In the photo: Viktor Volaj)
