Bajram Curri

The outstanding patriot and democrat, leader of the movement for the liberation of the National Union, Hero of the People, Bajram Curri, was born in Gjakova. He was one of the organizers and leaders of the Albanian League of Peja (1899), one of the main leaders of the Ferizaj Assembly (1908). He helped in the establishment of Albanian schools and clubs in Kosova, defended the Albanian alphabet approved at the Congress of Manastir (1908), participated and directed the “Bashkimi” club in Skopje. Bajram Curri was a fighter and leader in all Albanian movements and uprisings against the Ottoman occupation, in the Mbishkodra Highlands Uprising (1910), in the general armed uprising of 1911-1912. He distinguished himself as a commander in chief in the battles in Qafa e Prushit and Fusha e Kosovës. With his brave men and collaborators, he liberated Skopje and the entire province of Kosova. In the Congress of Lushnja (1920), Bajram Curri was elected a member of the National Council and was listed alongside the country’s democratic forces. He stood alongside Noli and other democrats in the Democratic Revolution of June 1924 and was killed by the agents of Ahmet Zogu, in the cave of Dragobia, in 1925. (In the photo: Bajram Curri)
