Hasan Kaleshi (1922-1976), orientalist, professor, with valuable contribution to the development of Albanian orientalism, was born in Sërbicë of Kërçova. He attended six grades in the Great Madrasah of Skopje and graduated from the “Sami Frashëri” gymnasium in Prishtina (1944). He completed his higher studies in oriental philology at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade (1951), where he also deepened his knowledge of the Arabic language. From 1952, he first worked as an assistant and then as a docent of the Arabic language at the Department of Oriental Philology, in Belgrade. He specialized in turkology in Hamburg (1966–1967). During the years 1967-1970, he worked at the Albanological Institute of Prishtina. In 1970, he was elected full-time professor at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Prishtina; one of the founders of the department of oriental studies (1973), which he directed until 1976, when he passed away. The scientific activity of Hasan Kaleshi includes a very wide spectrum: albanology, history, Arabic studies, turkology, folklore, etc., and he collaborated with various scientific journals in the country and abroad.
