In the village of Vig in Mirdita, the “War of Vig” took place. A partisan unit consisting of five communists—Ndoc Mazi, Naim Gjylbegu, Ndoc Deda, Ahmet Haxhia, and Hydajet Lezha—found themselves surrounded and bravely fought against 300 opposing forces. The members of this unit were young men, aged 23 to 26, hailing from Shkodra, Miloti, Kruja, and Lezha. They were known for their strong anti-fascist sentiments and activities, having been convicted and tortured in prisons, and they played active roles with significant responsibilities within the ranks of territorial and partisan formations in the Shkodra district. Their heroism resonated throughout the Northern Highlands, further enhancing the faith and commitment of the people in these regions toward the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War.(In the photo: The “5 Heroes of Vigu” monument, Shkodër.)
