Daut Boriçi

Daut Boriçi, clergyman, patriot, teacher and textbook designer, passed away in Shkodër. He was born in Shkodër, in 1825. He headed the Bushatllinje Madrasa in Shkodër and the Normal School in Istanbul. He taught in the schools of the city of Shkodra and made efforts to spread education in Lezhë, Krujë, Kavajë, Tirana, Dibër and Ulcinj. For the needs of the Albanian school, Daut Boriçi published: “Alfabeti shqip” (“The Albanian alphabet”)(1861), “Abetarja shqipe” (“The Albanian prime”) with Arabic letters (Istanbul, 1869, reprinted in 1881). He left writings manuscripted such as: “Gramatikë shqipe” (“Albanian grammar”), “Fjalor turqisht-shqip” (“Turkish-Albanian dictionary”) and two diaries, one from 1844-1850 and the other from 1893-1895. His works, mainly linguistic, are of interest for the history of the alphabet, grammar, lexicography and dialectology of the Albanian language. In the years of the Albanian League of Prizren, he headed the branch of the League in Shkodër, participated in the drafting of memorandums and protests sent to the Great Powers of Europe against the fragmentation of Albanian lands and organized and directed the popular forces for the protection of endangered territories. After the suppression of the League of Prizren, the Sublime Porte exiled him to Anatolia (1881–1888). After exile, he directed the education of the city of Shkodra (1889–1894).
