Thanas Floqi, lawyer, activist of the National Movement, publicist, linguist, composer and translator, passed away in Elbasan. He completed primary and secondary school in Greece. He started his higher law studies at the University of Athens, but interrupted them and returned to his homeland. After a short stay in Albania, he emigrated to the USA, where, in cooperation with Albanian compatriots, they founded the society “Mall’i Mëmëdheut” (1906), which was later included in the “Vatra” Federation. In 1908 he returned to Albania and stayed in Vlora and Korça, where he continued his patriotic, educational and cultural activities. After the Declaration of National Independence, Thanas Floqi worked as a lawyer in the state administration in Vlora, as a translator at the International Border Commission in Shkodër, and in March 1914, he was appointed chief secretary in the Ministry of Justice of Vilhelm Vid’s government. With the departure of Wied (September 1914), Floqi returned to Elbasan, where he stayed until the end of his life. (In the photo: Thanas Floqi)
