Nexhmedin Zajmi, painter, People’s Painter, was born in the village of Trebisht in Golloborda (Bulqiza). In 1937, he completed the School of Drawing in Tirana. In the years 1939–1943 he completed higher studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome (1939–1943). He worked as a teacher at the artistic high school “Jordan Misja” (1946–1963) with an interruption, when he was the director of the National Art Gallery (1955–1956); in the years 1963–1969, lecturer at the Higher Institute of Arts, then in free creativity. In his work, Nexhmedin Zajmi discovered types and characters with a special, realistic psychology, painted with tonal tools, through restrained colours and drawing. The portraits: “Bajram Curri” (1957), “Malësori”, “Zadrimorja” and those of well-known figures of partisans, workers and peasants are outstanding realistic works. His other works are: “Tregim nga Lufta Nacionalçlirimtare” (“Story from the National Liberation War”) (1954), “Prita partizane” (“The partisan ambush”) (1954), “Diga e Drinit” (“The Dam of Drin”) (1969). Nexhmedin Zajmi has participated in many joint exhibitions inside and outside the country: in the Soviet Union, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, China, Egypt, Macedonia, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Kosova, etc. He passed away in Tirana, in 1991.
