On April 2, 1879, Aleksandër Moisiu, a world-renowned actor of Albanian descent and posthumously honored as a “People’s Artist,” was born in Trieste, Italy. He hailed from the Moisiu family, originally from Kavaja, Albania. Moisiu completed high school in Graz, Austria, in 1898. After his father’s death, his family moved to Vienna, where he briefly attended the Vienna Conservatory. Due to financial constraints, he worked as an applauder at the Opera and as an extra at the Burgtheater. He began his acting career in 1899 on the stage of the Burgtheater and made a successful debut in 1903 at the German Theater in Prague. In 1905, renowned director Max Reinhardt brought him into his theater, where Moisiu’s talents were recognized in roles like Osvald (from Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts) and Hamlet (Shakespeare). Notably, he performed the role of Fedya in The Living Corpse by Leo Tolstoy 1,200 times, skillfully conveying the existential angst of man facing death. In 1917, he received a certificate affirming his Albanian nationality. From 1924 to 1929, he performed in Moscow, Leningrad, Paris, and major cities in North America; in 1931, he toured South America. Due to Nazi persecution (suspected of being Jewish because of his surname), Moisiu left Germany in 1932 and settled in Switzerland. In 1933, he applied for Albanian citizenship at the Albanian Embassy in Vienna, which was granted in April 1934. Moisiu passed away prematurely, at the height of his stage career, in Vienna. In the history of world theater, Aleksandër Moisiu is especially noted for his original interpretations, powerful temperament, philosophical depth, lyricism, and the poetic beauty he brought to his characters. He was also remembered for his unique, resonant voice. In honor of his legacy, the Palace of Culture, the dramatic theater, and the University in the city of Durrës bear his name, as well as a square in Trieste. Museums dedicated to Aleksandër Moisiu exist in Vienna and Durrës. (In photo: Aleksandër Moisiu)
