Alajdin Demiri, diplomat, political analyst, and university professor, has passed away. Born in Tetovo in 1954, he studied sociology in Sarajevo from 1973 to 1977. From 1977 to 1978, he worked as a journalist at Macedonian Radio Television in the Albanian language section. Between 1978–1983 and 1983–1988, he taught sociology and philosophy in a high school in Tetovo, later working at the city library. In 1990–1995, Demiri studied French in Lausanne, Switzerland. He returned in 1995, becoming active in politics with the Party for Democratic Prosperity. In 1997, he was elected mayor of Tetovo. In 1998, he was sentenced to two years in prison for raising the national flag outside Tetovo’s municipal building—a symbolic act that paralleled similar events in Gostivar, marked by violent police suppression that led to casualties and arrests. His release was later secured by an Amnesty Law after the European Parliament called for it. In the late 1990s, he was appointed as North Macedonia’s ambassador to Switzerland. Upon his return, he served as a university professor at the South East European University in Tetovo. (In the photo: Alajdin Demiri)
