The patriot and fighter for freedom and democracy, the prominent Arbëresh Domenik Mauri (Domenico Mauro), was born in San Demetrio Corone of Calabria. He was one of the leaders of the uprising of 1848, in Calabria, and after a period of exile in the Ionian Islands (Greece) and in Rome (Italy), he became one of the thousand “red shirts” of Giuseppe Garibaldi, following him until in Marseille (France). Domenik Mauri is also known as an outstanding poet, who wrote verses only in the Italian language. (In the photo: View from the village of San Demetrio Corone, Calabria.)
