The Albanian Royal Court officially announced the engagement of King Zog to the Hungarian Countess Geraldina. On January 26, 1938, Budapest newspapers announced that Countess Geraldine Apponyi was expected to be engaged to the King of the Albanians, Ahmet Zogu, 43 years old. The next day, the Albanian Royal Court confirmed this news. Geraldine had met King Zog in December 1937, through the mediation of the monarch’s sister. Geraldina went to Albania and within a few days the couple got engaged. The 22-year-old countess, daughter of the late Count Gyula Apponyi, a former Hungarian officer, and Virginia Stewart, the daughter of an American diplomat, was Catholic and worked at the National Museum in Budapest for a small fee.
