Clement XI, Pope in 1700–1721, died in Rome. Baptismal name: Giovanni Francesco Albani. He was born in Urbino (Italy) in a noble family of Albanian origin from Laçi of Kurbin. He was appointed cardinal by Pope Innocent XI in 1690. He was elected Pope on 23.11.1700, about two months after the death of Innocent XII. Clement fought against nepotism within the church. In the years 1715–1718, he supported Venice and Emperor Charles VI in the war against the Ottomans. During the pontificate of Clement XI, under the leadership of the Archbishop of Tivar, Vinçenc Zmajeviqi, the Assembly of Arbëni convened in 1703, and its minutes were published in 1706 in Albanian and Latin..
