On April 24, 1951, the Albanian Air Force was established. Efforts to create the Air Force started early. Pre-World War II governments, despite their efforts, failed to do so, mainly for economic reasons. The first step to create an Air Force in Albania was taken in 1914, when the Albanian government ordered the purchase of three “Lohner Daimler” planes from Austria to form the Albanian Air Corps. Due to the First World War, the order was canceled and during the years 1920–1930 Albania did not have the necessary resources to resume the development of an Air Force. The first efforts to purchase airplanes and to establish an Air Force resumed again in the late 1930s, during which cadets for pilots were sent for studies in Austria, Italy, and France. But the Albanian Air Force was created after the Second World War. In 1962, the Aviation Regiment was established in Rinas, which had in its composition a squadron of MIG-19 aircrafts and a squadron of MIG-17 aircrafts.
