Asim Zeneli, a participant in the National Liberation Antifascist War, Hero of the People, was killed while fighting against numerous fascist forces in the Mezhgoran gorge. He was born in Progonat, Kurvelesh, in 1916. As a student at the Military Infantry Academy in Rome, he protested against the fascist occupation of Albania, organizing an anti-fascist demonstration at school, for which he was arrested in 1939. He returned to his homeland at the end of 1941 and joined the communists in the Elbasan district. He did significant work, especially within the ranks of the old Albanian army, to promote desertion and disintegration within its ranks. In April 1943, he joined the ranks of the Albanian National Liberation Army, became a member of the Communist Party of Albania, and was appointed political commissioner of the “Hajredin Tremishti” unit. He fell in battle while fighting against numerous fascist forces in the Mezhgoran gorge. A bust of Asim Zeneli has been placed in the city of Tepelena, and schools and other institutions bear his name. (In the photo: Asim Zeneli)
