Mehmet Ali Vrioni, patriot, political personality of the National Renaissance was born in Berat. During the Eastern Crisis (1875–1881) he connected with Abdyl Frashër and became one of his closest collaborators. He was a member of the Albanian Committee of Ioannina, which was formed in May 1877, and of the Central Committee for the Protection of the Rights of the Albanian Nation (December 1877). He accompanied Abdyl Frashëri in the talks that took place with the representatives of Athens in July and December 1877 to establish an Albanian-Greek political and military alliance. During the years of the Albanian League of Prizren, he became a member of its General Council. He participated in the diplomatic mission carried out by the delegation of the League in the capitals of the Great Powers in the spring of 1879 for the protection of the Albanians’ national rights and Albania’s territorial integrity. After the suppression of the League of Prizren, he was imprisoned for some time. The last act known about his patriotic activity is the memorandum of 1888, addressed to the Italian Prime Minister Francesco Crispi, which bears his signature and that of Abdyl Frashëri.
