Omer Nishani

Omer Nishani, leader of the democratic movement, participant of the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War and high functionary of the post-war Albanian state, chairman of the Presidium of the People’s Assembly (1946-1953), passed away . He was born in Gjirokastër, in 1887. He studied medicine in Istanbul. He participated in the Democratic Revolution of June 1924 and, after Ahmet Zogu came to power, he lived in exile for 15 years, where he developed a dense activity against Ahmet Zogu’s regime. He is one of the founders of KONARE (National Liberation Committee – National Liberation Committee) and together with Halim Xhelo published the newspaper “Liria Kombetare” (“National Freedom”) (1925). He returned to Albania after the Italian invasion and was elected a member of the State Council, but then he joined the National Liberation Front and helped in the fight to liberate the country from the fascist invaders. At the II National Liberation Conference of Labinot (1943) he was elected a member of the National Liberation Anti-Fascist General Council; at the First National Liberation Anti-Fascist Congress, he was elected chairman of the National Liberation Anti-Fascist Council (Përmet, May 1944).
