The Guard of the Republic of Albania was founded, a specialized military unit for the protection of high state personalities and central state residences and headquarters. It is a structure with special status under the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It was established in 1912, with the creation of the Provisional Government of Vlora (1912) and the Independent State of Albania, as part of the forces responsible for maintaining order, a special unit was designated for the security of state personalities, called the State Guard. The functions and organization of the guard were determined by law on 24.06.1928. On 12.02.1944, it was re-established as a subordinate unit for the security of the General Staff of the National Liberation Army. Since 1947, it has been called the “Guard of the Republic.” The activities of the Guard of the Republic of Albania, after the political changes of 1990, were regulated by Law No. 7602, dated 09.09.1992 “On the Guard of the Republic.” (In the photo: Members of the Guard of the Republic)
