In Ferizaj, Kosovo, Dom Shtjefën Kurti was born, a martyr of the Catholic Church. He studied at the Seminary of Shkodra, then in Innsbruck, Austria, and finally, in 1919, in Rome. He was ordained a priest in Rome on May 13, 1921. In 1930, he returned to Albania for the Diocese of Durrës, now Tirana-Durrës. In Kosovo, he served as a parish priest in Ferizaj and Novoselë. In Albania, he served as a parish priest in Zheja, Gurrëzi, and Tirana. He was arrested twice: the first time in Tirana on October 27, 1946, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, of which he served 17 years in the notorious prison of Burrel; the second time he was arrested in Gurrëz on June 11, 1970. He was sentenced to death and executed in the village of Gurrëz, Lezhë, in 1971. (In the photo: Shtjefën Kurti)
