In Tirana, Vangjush Mio, a painter and part of the first half of the 20th-century Albanian realist artists, passed away. He was born in Korçë in 1891. He was one of the most important figures in Albanian visual arts, distinguished as an outstanding landscape and portrait artist, known and esteemed as the “poet” of Albanian landscape. Vangjush Mio studied painting at the National School of Fine Arts in Bucharest, Romania (1915–1919), and in Rome, where he completed his studies at the Royal Academy of St. Luke (San Luca, 1924). Vangjush Mio was the first impressionist painter in Albania. The artist’s house in Korçë has been declared a “Museum House”, and the Cultural Center bears his name. He was honored with the title “Painter of the People”. (In the photo: Vangjush Mio, self-portrait, 1939.)
