Kastriot Islami

Kastriot Islami was born in Tirana and served as the Speaker of the Assembly of Albania from 1991 to 1992, emerging from the first elections held after the establishment of political pluralism. He was a physicist, professor, and political activist. In his hometown, he completed high school and higher studies in the physics department at the University of Tirana in 1976. From 1976 to 1979, he worked in the Geology-Geodesy Enterprise Laboratory and the Directorate of Legal Metrology. He pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Paris XI, Orsay (1981–1985), where he received his degree as “Doctor of Science” in atomic and molecular physics. He also completed several postgraduate specializations, including at the Molecular Spectroscopy Laboratory of the University of Giessen in Germany (1993-1995), with a scholarship from the “Alexander von Humboldt” Foundation. He authored the texts “Bazat e mekanikës kuantike” (“Fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics”) volumes I (1989) and II (1990), and co-authored “Ushtrime të zgjidhura të mekanikës kuantike” (“Solved Exercises of Quantum Mechanics”) (2000), “Mekanika kuantike” (“Quantum Mechanics”) (2002), and the monograph “Teoria e grupeve dhe zbatimet e saj studimin e strukturës lëndës” (“Group Theory and Its Applications to the Study of Subject Structure”) (1990). He published a series of articles in the scientific press both in Albania and abroad and participated in national and international scientific activities. He was a deputy of the Socialist Party in the Albanian Parliament from 1991 onwards and held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Education (March-April 1991), Speaker of the Assembly (April 1991-March 1992), Deputy Prime Minister (April 1998-October 1998), Minister of Finance (February 2002-December 2003), and Minister of Foreign Affairs (December 2003-September 2005).
