Ahmet Gashi

Ahmet Gashi, activist of the national movement and education, geographer and historian, Teacher of the People, was born in Pristina. He received his first lessons in his hometown. He graduated in history and geography from Istanbul University (1910). Since the establishment of the education department in the Provisional Government of Vlora, he was appointed a professor in the “Normal” of Elbasan, where he was also the director in the years 1927-1933. He participated as a delegate in the educational congresses of 1920 and 1922, while in the Educational Congress of Tirana (1924) he was elected its chairman. He also taught at the “Nana Mbretneshë(“Queen Mother”) female institute in Tirana (1933-1941) and was the director of the “Sami Frashërihigh school in Prishtina (1944). In the years 1945-1964, he worked as a geography teacher in Tirana. He is known as the author of a series of schoolworks in the field of geography. He published the text “Gjeografia e Shqipnisë (“Geography of Albania”) for secondary schools (1933, reprinted in 1937 under the title “Shqipnia“) and “Gjeografia e përgjithshme” (“General Geography”) për shkollat e mesme (1935). Compiled and published several geographical and historical maps. He is the first Albanian geographer accepted as a member of the American Geographical Society (The National Geographic Society, Washington DC) in 1936. He was the bearer of many recognitions and decorations. He passed away in 1977. (In the photo: Ahmet Gashi)
