Zaho Balili

Zaho Balili was born in Rezh of Kurveles. He completed two high schools, the general one in Tepelena and the agricultural high school by correspondence in the village of Damas in Tepelena. At the age of 14, he started working at the Cars and Tractors Station, as a mechanic and over the years managed to become a combine harvester driver. Zaho Balili took part in the cultural life of the city, where his recitations and participation in many theatrical pieces that the Palace of Culture and the city’s enterprises presented to the Tepelena public stood out. At the end of the 1970s and 1980s, together with other poets from Tepelena, he became one of the main suppliers of texts to the city’s Lab groups. In 1986, the House of Culture of Hormovë village was inaugurated. Zaho Balili was appointed the director of this cultural center until 1990. He started writing from a young age and is the author of several volumes, such as: “Drithërimet e pranverës” (“Spring tremors”), “Paskan çelur manushaqet” (“Violets have blossomed”), “Brengat e shpirtit”(“Sorrows of the soul”), “Lot kurbeti” (“Tears of migration”) etc. Participant in the folklore festivals of Gjirokastra 1988, 1992, and that of Berat, in 1996. In 1998 he left for Greece, where he became the first chairman of the “Labëria” association, Athens branch. Zaho Balili could not live without the lab song, so, during this time, he joins a lab group in Athens and becomes the rhapsody of the “Lot kurbeti” group. This group has released four volumes of songs, most of which are authored by Zaho Balili. He passed away in Athens, on October 3, 2001. (In the photo: Zaho Balili)
