Adil Çarçani, former Prime Minister of Albania (1982–1990) and a prominent leader of the Party of Labour of Albania, was born in Fushëbardhë, Gjirokastër, in 1922. He completed high school in Gjirokastër. Between 1942–1944, he participated in the National Liberation Anti-Fascist War and joined the Albanian Communist Party in 1942. Çarçani held various political roles during the war, including Deputy Political Commissar of the Battalion (1943), Deputy Political Commissar of the VII Assault Brigade (1944), and Political Commissar of the IV Assault Division (1944). After the war, he held high positions in the Party of Labour of Albania and the state, becoming a member of the Central Committee, a candidate for the Political Byro (1956), and later a full member (1961). He served as Minister of Mines and Geology (1959–1965), Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers (1965–1982), and Chairman of the Council of Ministers (1982–1990). Çarçani was a member of the People’s Assembly of the People’s Republic of Albania (1950–1992). In 1992, he was sentenced to five years in prison for abuse of office, though his sentence was suspended due to age and health reasons. He passed away in Tirana in 1997. (In photo: Adil Çarçani)
