Androkli Kostallari, linguist, professor, academic, Teacher of the People, passed away in Tirana. He was born in Leusa in Përmet, in 1894. He finished high school in Shkodër and Tirana. He participated in the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War; in the first years after the war, he worked in the press and held managerial positions. He completed his higher philological studies at the “Lomonosov” University in Moscow (1954). He started working at the Institute of Sciences and then at the Faculty of History and Philology of the University of Tirana, where he was also dean. Androkli Kostallari directed the Institute of History and Linguistics (since 1958) and then the Institute of Linguistics and Literature until 1990; editor-in-chief of the magazine “Studime filologjike” (1964-1991) and “Studia albanica” (1964-1980). He is one of the founding members of the Academy of Sciences of Albania and a member of its presidium. The main fields of Androkli Kostallari’s scientific and pedagogical activity are lexicology and lexicography, word formation, onomastics, general linguistics and the Albanian literary language (its history and state). He has conducted a number of studies on the Albanian lexicon, the peculiarities of compound words in the Albanian language, and various theoretical issues in the field of Albanian lexicography. He was in charge of the sector of lexicology and lexicography (1955-1990) and scientific director and editor-in-chief of two explanatory dictionaries of Albanian: “Fjalor i gjuhës së sotme shqipe” (“Dictionary of today’s Albanian language”) (1980) and “Fjalor i shqipes së sotme” (“Dictionary of today’s Albanian”)(1984). An important object of Androkli Kostallari’s scientific activity has been the history of the formation and development of the Albanian literary language and its structural and functional features. He has represented Albanian science in international forums: in 1960, he was elected a member of the International Committee of Onomastic Sciences (ISO). He held the title “Doctor honoris causa” of the University of Gothenburg (Sweden). He received the Republic Award of the first degree (twice). (In the photo: Androkli Kostallari)
