Auguste Dozon, a French Balkanologist and Albanologist, passed away. He was born in France in 1822. He served in the French consulates of Ioannina, Thessaloniki, etc. He published the work “Manuel de la langue Albanaise” (“Manual of the Albanian Language”), Paris, 1879, the first part of which contains folk tales, folk songs, proverbs, and other unpublished texts. The second part includes a systematic grammar of Albanian based on Tosk dialect, mainly on the dialect spoken in Përmet. An appendix describes the basic features of phonetics and morphology of Gheg dialect. At the end of the book, there is an Albanian-French dictionary with about 4000 words. The folk tales were only translated into French in the book “Contes albanais” (“Albanian Tales”), Paris, 1881, equipped with an introduction and an extensive explanatory section.
