Bekim Lumi

Bekim Lumi, a director and university professor, was born in Suharekë (Kosovo). He completed his primary education in his hometown and his secondary education in Pristina. He studied Albanian language and literature at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Pristina (1991) and completed his studies in theater directing at the Faculty of Scenic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tirana (1996). In 1998, he founded the “Loja” theater in Munich (Germany), where he began working as a director. Later, he staged productions at the “Dodona” theater and the National Theater of Kosovo. In 2006, he founded the theater magazine “Loja“. In 2009, he established an independent theater in Pristina, which he named the Laboratory Theater “Loja“. From 2002, he worked as a theater directing lecturer at the Faculty of Arts (Department of Dramatic Arts) at the University of Pristina. At the “Dodona” theater, he staged the productions “Mësimi” (“The lesson”) (2002) and “Galani” (2003). He continued with productions at the National Theater of Kosovo: “The House of Bernarda Alba” (2006), “The Martin Couple” (2008), “Mother and Child” (2015). Meanwhile, at the “Loja” theater, he created productions such as “Këmisha e gjakut” (“The blood shirt”)  (2010), “Kanuni i Lekë Dukagjinit” (“The Kanun of Lekë Dukagjin”), “John Cage’s Hamlet” (2015), and others. Through his productions, he represented Kosovo at various international theater festivals, both regionally and internationally, where he was honored with various awards: at the International Theater Festival (2006) in Lugano (Switzerland), the production “Mësimi” received the award for best production; at the International Chamber Theater Festival in Vratza, Bulgaria (2011), the production “The Martin Couple” received the award for best musical production, while the production “Këmisha e gjakut” received special recognition at the International Theater Festival “MESS” in Sarajevo (2012). In 2016, his production “John Cage’s Hamlet” received the annual award for best directing for the year 2015 from the Ministry of Culture of Kosovo. He passed away in 2018. (In the photo: Bekim Lumi)
