Migjeni (Millosh Gjergj Nikolla), a poet and prose writer, died in a sanatorium near Turin, Italy. He was born in Shkodër in 1911, where he received his early education before completing his studies at the city school in Tivar. From 1929 to 1933, he attended the Theological Seminary of Manastir. After returning to his homeland, he worked as a primary school teacher in Vra (Shkodër) and Pukë. During this time, he struggled with a lung disease that had developed while he was in the seminary. In late 1937, he went to Italy for treatment and to pursue higher studies in literature, but he was hospitalized in a sanatorium near Turin, where he passed away in 1938. Migjeni began publishing his first poems and sketches in magazines such as “Illyrija” and “Bota e re” (“New World”). His complete works were published by Skënder Luarasi in 1957, under the auspices of the League of Writers and Artists. Subsequently, his writings were published multiple times in Tirana and Prishtina. Migjeni’s poetry introduced new themes to Albanian literature, highlighting the lives of the impoverished segments of society, themes of misery and its moral consequences, and the artistic experience that called for change and a vision of a better, more peaceful, and just world. He exemplified a humanism that rejected myths, cults, and all forms of irrational and sentimental attitudes. Though his narrative prose was not published during his lifetime, it captured the literary movement’s desire to move away from romantic-sentimental visions and outdated idols. Materialist in his beliefs, Migjeni recognized that an individual’s psyche was shaped by their economic circumstances, and he sought to depict this dependence on the harsh realities of complex social relations. His work was a profound expression of the painful concerns of Albanian spiritual life, urging the imagination of a human society where the individual could fully realize themselves amid existential complexities. Migjeni remains one of the most read writers in Albanian literature, with his creativity playing a significant reformative and innovative role, reflecting the modern developments of European literature, which is one reason his work has been translated into several languages.
