The Constitutional Assembly that emerged from the first post-war elections proclaimed the People’s Republic of Albania, today the Republic of Albania. After the country’s exit from World War II in November 1944, Albania was still a democratic-parliamentary kingdom, and hereditary. On January 12, 1946, the meeting elected the Presidium of the Assembly, chaired by Dr. Omer Nishani, well-known personality of the democratic movement and the National Liberation War.
