Asim Zeneli, a participant in the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War and Hero of the People, was born in Kurvelesh, Progonat. A student at the Military Infantry Academy in Rome, he protested against the fascist occupation of Albania, organized an anti-fascist demonstration at school and was arrested for this (1939). He returned to his homeland at the end of 1941 and joined the communists in the district of Elbasan. He did a great job, especially in the ranks of the old Albanian army, for the desertion and debauchery of its ranks. He joined the ranks of the Albanian National Liberation Army in April 1943, was accepted as a member of the Albanian Communist Party and was appointed political commissar of the “Hajredin Tremishti” detachment. He fell fighting against numerous fascist forces in the gorge of Mezhgoran. The bust of Asim Zeneli is located in the city of Tepelena. Schools and other insitutions bear his name.
