Qazim Turdiu, mathematician, professor, Teacher of the People, was born in Tirana. He completed high school in his hometown. After completing his university studies in Montpellier (France), during which he was also awarded a prize, worked for several years as a high school teacher in Shkodër and moved to Tirana. After establishing the Two-Year Pedagogical Institute (1946), he was appointed a lecturer. After the establishment of the 4-year institutes of higher education (1951) and the University of Tirana, he worked in them for more than 30 years, first in the teaching branches and then mainly in the Faculty of Engineering. He was the holder of several main subjects in the branch of mathematics and physics. Until the end of the 50sof the 20th century , he was engaged in young teachers’ scientific and methodical qualification. His adaptations of “Analytical Geometry” and “Algebra” for high school (1951) paved the way for the creation of original texts, such as “Trigonometric Planes” (1961, co-authored), “Elements of Mathematical Analysis” (1963), etc. Initiator of research in mathematics didactics, published as co-author the works “Mathematics as a Science and as a School Subject I, II” (1972), “Algebra Methodology I, II” (1978), “Arithmetic Methodology” (1981), etc. He published articles and papers on special problems of teaching mathematics in pedagogical scientific journals. He is the author of the book “Mathematics in the Centuries” (1976), the first comprehensive treatise in the Albanian language on the historical development of mathematics.(In the photo: Qazim Turdiu)
