“Atheist Museum” opens in Shkodër, with anti-religious propaganda. Albania ranks as the first country worldwide to have an atheist museum. On 10 July 1968, an atheist exhibition entitled “On the reactionary role of religion” was inaugurated in Shkodër, which remained open for 5 years and served as a traveling exhibition going to villages, highlands, and industrial areas to make anti-religious propaganda. On June 9, 1973, the exhibition was transformed into an “Atheist Museum” with anti-religious propaganda. At the entrance of the museum, a quote by Marx has placed: “Religion is opium for the people.” In the stands of each pavilion, documents, photographs, and various materials were exhibited, which aimed to highlight the hostile and reactionary role of the clergy, especially the Catholic one, as a servant of the Vatican and imperialism. Also, this museum had a moving exhibition consisting of 23 stands, which were exhibited in different areas of Shkodra and Albania. The “Atheist Museum” remained open until December 13, 1990.
