Milan Shuflai, Croatian historian, researcher of medieval Albanian history, was born in Zagreb, Croatia. In the years 1908-1918 he was a professor at the University of Zagreb. After the creation of the Yugoslav state, he was fired for political reasons, sentenced to prison and forbidden to accept a call to the University of Budapest. After a trip to Albania, he was brutally murdered by the Yugoslav police. His killing sparked a wave of international protests. Shuflai is the co-author of the compilation of two volumes “Acts and diplomas”, which illustrate the issues of medieval Albania. In 1924, his fundamental work “Cities and fortresses of Albania mainly during the Middle Ages” was published by the Vienna Academy of Sciences. Later, the works “History of Northern Albania” and “Serbs and Albanians” followed. Under the pseudonym Alba Limi, Milan Shuflai published in 1920 the historical novel with an Albanian theme, “Konstantin Balsha”. In his works, the history of the Albanians stands out as an ethnocultural entity with ancient autochthonous roots and uninterrupted continuity, as well as great regenerative ability. He was killed by the Serbian police in 1931. (In the photo: Milan Shuflai)
