He was born in Vuno, Himara. He completed his high school education in Vlorë. He pursued higher education and graduated from the Moscow Film Institute as a cinematographer (1960). He began working as a cinematographer at the “New Albania” Film Studio, where he filmed “Debatik” (1961), “Our Land” (1964), and “The Light Commissioner” (1966, co-author). His first film as an independent director was “Silent Duel” (1967), which showcases achievements in psychological storytelling. Following that, he realized the films “Old Wounds” (1969) and “Mountains Covered with Greenery” (1971), expressing his unique style, characterized by a clear and concise cinematic language. A pinnacle is marked by the film “The Poppies on the Walls” (1976), which won several national and international awards and is regarded as one of the most accomplished works of Albanian cinematography. In his later films “A Tale from the Past” (1987) and “The Return of the Dead Army” (1989), Dhimitër Anagnosti was also the screenwriter. His most recent film is “Gjoleka, the Son of Abazi” (2006). In March 1991, Dhimitër Anagnosti was elected as a deputy and appointed Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports (1992–1996). Dhimitër Anagnosti has received the Republic Prize of the first class (twice) and the second class (once), and has won three international awards, including a grand prize and a gold medal. He is a winner of three trophies from Albanian film festivals, as well as the “Aleksandër Moisiu” award (1989); at the 10th Albanian Film Festival (1995), he was honored with the “Career Award.” (In the photo: Dhimitër Anagnosti)
