In the village of Ndërfushaz, Mirditë, Maria Tuçi was born. After completing school in 1946, Abbot Frano Gjini sent her as a teacher to the school in Mirditë. At the same time, Maria also devoted herself to faith, becoming increasingly involved with the Catholic Church, where she was serving. Maria Tuçi was arrested on August 10, 1949. Following a reprisal by the communist regime of that time, prompted by the execution of Bardhok Biba, the secretary of the Communist Party in Mirditë, the most prominent families of the area were punished, including the Gjonmarkaj family, to which Maria belonged. She was violently taken and brought to the interrogation rooms. She was personally tortured by Hilmi Seiti, the chief of the Shkodër interrogation unit. The most inhumane torture inflicted upon Maria Tuçi, witnessed by dozens of people, was when she was stripped and placed in a sack with a wild cat, while she was beaten with hard objects. Maria was taken to the Shkodër hospital in a critical condition, where, after a few days, she died as a result of the physical and psychological violence. (In the photograph: Maria Tuçi)
