Halit Bërzeshta (1840–1909), activist of the National Renaissance and military doctor of the Ottoman Empire, passed away in Thessaloniki. He was born in Bërzeshta (Elbasan), completed the state high school in Istanbul and graduated as a pharmacist at the military medical school. In Ioannina, he met the Frashëri brothers and collaborated for a long time with Naim. He became one of the propagandists of national ideas, spreading Albanian books and newspapers wherever he worked. Supported the activity of the Albanian League of Peja (1899). Together with Bajo Topulli and other patriots, he participated in the establishment of the “Committee for the Freedom of Albania” in Manastir, in 1905, and became one of its main leaders.
