The writer Ismail Kadare was born in Gjirokastra. Ismail Kadare is a poet and prose writer and one of the most prominent representatives of Albanian literature. He is one of the central personalities of the Albanian culture of the second half of the 20th century. Completed secondary education in his hometown. In 1958, he graduated from the department of language and literature at the University of Tirana and then continued his studies for two years at the “Gorki” Institute in Moscow. His literary beginnings are mainly in poetry (“Boyish inspirations”, “Why these mountains are thought of”, etc.). In the field of prose, Ismail Kadare has worked on short stories, novellas, and novels. “The General of the Dead Army” (1963) constitutes the work of confirmation of his talent. “Chronicle in stone”, “Broken April”, “The Shelf of Shame”, “The Great Pashaliks”, “Who brought Doruntina”, etc., are some of his most important works, which make up his literary creativity. His works have been translated and published in over 45 foreign languages and he is the most famous Albanian writer in the world. In 2005, Ismail Kadare won “The Booker Prize Man”. Ismail Kadare has been decorated with the “Honour of the Nation” Order and by the French state with the “Cross of the Legion of Honor” orders, as well as other awards. (In the photo: Ismail Kadare)
