Luan Muftiu, writer, translator and teacher, was born in Berat. His father was arrested at a young age. From the suffering, the mother – after her brother and then her nephew were shot – suffered a nervous breakdown and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital, leaving the children alone. Muftiu completed the pedagogic school in Berat, and for some time worked as a teacher. He was arrested in December 1975, in Vlora. On April 20, 1976, the District Court of Berat declared him guilty of “agitation and propaganda against people’s power” and sentenced him to 10 years in prison; his property was confiscated and he lost his electoral right for a period of 5 years. He served his sentence in Spaçi prison, where he was re-sentenced. After the fall of the dictatorship, he settled in Tirana. (In the photo: Luan Muftiu)
