Mihal Grameno

The patriot, publicist, writer and activist of the patriotic and democratic movement, Mihal Grameno (1871–1931), passed away. He was born in Korça. He received his first lessons in his hometown. At a young age, he emigrated to Bucharest, Romania, where he joined the Albanian patriotic society “Drita”. In the years 1907-1908, he joined the Çerçiz Topulli’s detachment and, together with the fighters of the national detachment, fought in South Albania for national liberation. In 1909, he participated in the Congress of Manastir. During the years 1915-1919 he lived in America, where he worked for the movement of Albanian patriots there. Then he continued his activity as a publicist, defending democratic ideals. Mihal Grameno is one of the first novelists of our literature. Thus, we mention his novella “The Fireplace” (1909), the comedy “The Curse of the Albanian Language” (1905) and the historical drama “The Death of Pyrrhus” (1906), which deal with patriotic themes. Also, Mihal Grameno directed the newspapers “Lidhja orthodokse” (“The orthodox league”) (1909–1910) and “Koha” (“The Time”) (1911–1926). He died in Korça in 1931. (In the photo: Mihal Grameno)
