Sotir Peci

Sotir Peci was born in Dardhё, Korçё, activist of the National Renaissance and the Independence period, prominent figure of national education, Teacher of the People. He published the newspaper “Kombi” in Boston (USA) (1906-1908). Together with Petro Nini Luarasi and Fan Nolin, they played a role in the formation of the society “Besa-besën” in Boston in 1907, and “Lidhja” in Saint Louis, among others. He participated in the Congress of Monastir in 1908. Upon the opening of the Normal School in Elbasan in 1909, he was appointed as a teacher of mathematics and natural sciences. He directed the Albanian School in Korçë (1911–1912). He was a member of the National Party (1914–1920), which was established in Shkodër with branches in the country’s major cities to oppose the plans of the Great Powers and neighboring countries for the partition of Albania. He participated as a delegate in the National Congress of Lushnja (1920) and in the government formed thereafter, he was appointed Minister of Education. For a few years, he was a member of the High Council. After the suppression of the June 1924 Democratic Revolution, he went into exile abroad. Sotir Peci provided assistance for educational issues as a publicist, author of school texts, and participant in Education Congresses in 1920 and 1922, among others. He passed away in Follorina, Greece, in 1932. (In the photo: Sotir Peci)
