Ahmet Dakli

As a result of persecution by the communist regime, Ahmet Dakli, an activist of the Albanian national movement, committed suicide. He was born in Elbasan, in 1879. He was one of the organizers of the Congress of Elbasan (September 1909), he worked alongside Luigj Gurakuqi and Aleksandër Xhuvan for the opening of the Normal School of Elbasan, a fighter in the Martanesh regiment (1912). He participated in the Assembly of Vlora (1912) for the Declaration of Independence. In the government of Ismail Qemali, he was charged with the task of secretary of the Ministry of Finance, collaborator and adviser of Aqif Biçak. He fought against the separatist positions of Esat Toptan. He supported the War of Vlora in 1920. During 1921 he was the Minister of Finance in the government of Pandeli Evangjeli and Hasan Prishtina. He published the newspaper “Ura e Shkumbinit” (“Shkumbin’s bridge”) in Elbasan. Support the Democratic Revolution of June 1924 and the government of Fan S. Noli. After his failure, he left Albania. He returned to the country taking advantage of the amnesty and accepted the post of mayor in Durrës (1929–1937) and Elbasan (1937–1939). With the fascist occupation of Albania, he was arrested and exiled to Italy. He ended his life in 1947, as a result of persecution by the communist regime. (In the photo: Ahmet Dakli)
