Nonda Bulka

Nonda Bulka, satirical writer, lecturer, passed away. He was born in Leusë of Përmet, in 1906. He attended the National Lyceum (French) in Korçë and attended higher studies in literature at the University of Toulouse (France), but he stopped because his scholarship was cut and he returned to Albania. He worked as a literature teacher at Korça High School. After the liberation, he was a literature teacher in secondary schools and a lecturer in the French department at the University of Tirana. In the early 1930s, he began to publish in the press of the time, under the pseudonym Chri-Chri, satirical writings which he collected in the book “Kur qan e qesh bibili” (“When the nightingale cries and laughs”)(1934). Nonda Bulka was one of the main representatives of the literary generation of the 30s. In his creations with a sharp journalistic spirit, he echoed the problems of the life of the Albanian society of the time and international events, expressed his dissatisfaction with the inequality and social injustices, exposed the moral degeneration of the leading circles. A special place in his writings was criticism of the aggressive imperialist policy and fascism on the eve of World War II. He laid the demand for a realistic literature with social content. After the liberation, Nonda Bulka continued to publish “Skica e tregime” (“Sketches and stories”) (1950), volumes of poems “Në dritën e yllit” (“In the light of the star”)(1952), “Soditje” (“Gaze”), “Bij të shkrepit” (1963) (“Sons of the crag”), “Fabula” (“Fables”) (1965), “Legjenda e një fisi” (“Legend of a tribe”) (1966). As a poet, he sang about partisan heroism, efforts to build a new life, patriotism, etc. Nonda Bulka also dealt with translations from world literature; brought into Albanian the novel “Eugenie Grandet” by Balzac, “My Universities” by Gorky, novels by Maupassan, Dode, etc. (In the photo: Nonda Bulka)
