Alan Shepard

Alan Shepard, the first American astronaut, was born in New Hampshire, USA, of Albanian origin from Dardha of Korça. Alan Shepard graduated from the United States Naval Academy (1944). In 1957 he graduated from the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island. Alan Shepard commanded the Apollo 14 flight, which included the first moon landing. He placed the Albanian flag on the ground satellite, which was handed over to the Albanian delegation participating in the 26th session of the United Nations. This flag is on display in the premises of the National Historical Museum in Tirana. During 1963–1969 Alan Shepard headed NASA’s astronaut office and then, in 1971–1974, retired from the Navy to pursue a career in private business in Texas. He received numerous awards, including the Distinguished Service Medal from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and the “Medal of Honor in Space” from the US Congress.
