In Korça, Thoma Turtulli, a Korça benefactor and philanthropist, passed away. He was born in Korça, in 1865. Already in 1885, the trading firm “Vellazëria Turtulli” (“Brotherhood Turtulli”) had crossed the Albanian borders and had established branches in Thessaloniki, Manastir and elsewhere. The trading firm “Turtulli” became a large universal warehouse with many stores, where not only construction and manufacturing materials, but also food items were traded. Stable character, experience in trade with Albanians and foreigners, as well as the well-known patriotic activity of the Korça region, had made Thoma Turtulli, not only distinguished in trade, but also an active patriot. In the exodus of people from Korça in 1919, when the news broke that Korça would be occupied by the Greek Andarts, Thoma Turtulli was among the first to leave as a family, along with other families from Korça, who went around Europe to sensitize the outside world about the dangers that their homeland was being threatened of, by foreigners. Turtulli, the great civic door, was involved in the patriotic movement of the Korça district. Some of the gifts that Thoma Turtulli gave to the city of Korça are: library (1930), orphanage (1930), hospital (1934), lyceum (1938), etc. (In the photo: “Thoma Turtulli” Hospital, Korçë.)
