Salih Çeka

Salih Çeka, national education activist and democratic publicist, Teacher of the People, was assassinated. He was born in Filat, Chameria, in 1892. In his hometown, he completed the Turkish secondary school (Idadije) and higher studies in pedagogy in Besançon (France). He worked as a teacher in the “Normal” of Elbasan (1913) and general inspector in the Ministry of Education (1922-1923). He was elected a representative of the province of Sulova in the Congress of Lushnja (1920) and was one of the initiators of the national educational congresses in 1922 and 1924. He directed the “Pedagogical Magazine” (September 1922 – July 1923), where he paved the way for critical thinking about the problems of education and laid the basic principles of building a national and secular school in Albania. He participated in the efforts of Albanian democrats for the political emancipation of the Albanian society as a member of the democratic society “Bashkimi” (1922-1924) and of the electoral group “As i pashës, as i beut”, during the elections for the Constitutional Assembly of 1923. He published and directed the progressive newspaper “Ku vemi?” (“Where are we going?”) (January 12, 1924 – October 19, 1924). (In the photo: Salih Çeka)
