Fatos Baxhaku

Fatos Baxhaku, a journalist, historian, publicist, and lecturer known for his sharp critiques of the Albanian transition, passed away. He was born in Tirana in 1964 and completed eight years of secondary education in his hometown. From 1982 to 1986, he studied at the University of Tirana at the Faculty of History and Philology, graduating with a degree in history. He worked at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences from 1986 to 1992 and was a co-founder, editor-in-chief, and journalist of “Gazeta Shqiptare” (“Albanian Newspaper”) from 1993 to 1998. He served as the first news editor at “Klan” television from 1998 to 1999 and was the editor-in-chief of the weekly magazine “XXL” from 1999 to 2000. From 2001 to 2005, he was the chief editor and journalist at “Vizion Plus” television, and from 2006 to 2015, he held the same roles at the daily “Shqip” (“Albanian”). After 2015, he worked as a freelance journalist. Fatos Baxhaku made significant contributions to publishing, authoring several books, including “Shoqëria e masave fisnore të Shqipërisë së Veriut” (“Societies of the Tribal Masses of Northern Albania”), “Guidë për Shkodrën” (“Guide to Shkodra”), “Në mirditë dhe rreth e rrotull” (“In Mirdita and Around”), “Roje” (“Guard”), and “Cadra e kuqe” (“Red Umbrella”): History of Austro-Albanian Destinies in the XIX-XXI Centuries.” He was also the author or co-author of numerous reports and many television documentaries, served as an external lecturer of journalism at the universities of Elbasan and Tirana, was a member of the Albanian Committee of Helsinki, and collaborated on various training projects with Soros, USAID, the Albanian Media Institute, and OSBE (Organization of State Broadcasting Executives).
