Jani Vruho

Jani Vruho, activist of the Albanian National Movement, publicist, died in Egypt. He got his first lessons in his hometown. He was born in Vërtop, Berat, in 1863. His family emigrated to Egypt (1881), where he collaborated with Albanian patriotic circles. He entered the field of journalism and publishing in the first decade of the 20th century. His name is associated with the publication of the satirical notebook “Shkopi (“Cane”), which had as its motto: “I claim the rights of the Albanian nation” (Cairo, 1907-1908). In the years 1909-1910, he published the newspaper “Rrufeja (“Thunder”), with the motto: “Carefully remove damage from foreigners”, followed by the newspaper “Sepata (“Ax”) (1910). In these newspapers, the problem of national unification and armed struggle for independence was discussed. From advanced democratic and anti-feudal positions, he also wrote in the newspapers “Drita” (“The light”) of Shahin Kolonja, “Liri e Shqipërisë “(Freedom of Albania”) of Kristo Luarasi, “Shqypeja e Shqypnis” of Josif Bager, etc. Protected the rights of the Albanian nation for freedom, independence, and its territorial integrity; supported the Lushnja Congress and the Vlora War (1920). On behalf of the Albanian society of Egypt, in 1927 he addressed the League of Nations with a protest against the Italian-Albanian slave pacts of 1926, 1927; crime, for which the regime of the time sentenced him to death in absentia.
